font_container=&#8221;tag:h1|font_size:32|text_align:left|color:%2389b36d&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221; link=&#8221;url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.palazzobiscari.it%2Fit%2Ffoto-gallery%2F|title:Foto%20Gallery|&#8221;][vc_column_text el_id=&#8221;01&#8243;]The Biscari Palace was built by the Patern\u00f2 Castello Principi di Biscari family and is, together with the Benedictine Convent of San Nicol\u00f2 l\u2019Arena, the most important and well-known building of eighteenth-century architecture in Catania.<\/p>\n<p>It rises over a stretch of the sixth-century walls of the city, on which, immediately after the earthquake of 1693, Ignazio Patern\u00f2 Castello III \u00b0 Principe di Biscari (d. 1699), obtained permission from Lieutenant General, Giuseppe Lanza Duke of Camastra, the architect of the reconstruction of Catania and envoy of the King of Spain, Charles II of Habsburg, to build the palace.<\/p>\n<p>His son Vincenzo (1685-1749) IV Prince, continued the work and his nephew Ignazio V \u00b0 (1714-1786) completed it, allocating space for the establishment of an archaeological, numismatic and naturalistic museum, open to all scholars.<\/p>\n<p>The palace belonged entirely to the Princes of Biscari until the middle of the 19th century, when, due to various legacies, it became the property of the Moncada Patern\u00f2 Castello, a branch of the Patern\u00f2 Castello.<\/p>\n<p>The palace is still largely inhabited by the descendants of the family and its main halls are often used for prestigious social and cultural events.<\/p>\n<p>In 1924, the museum was closed and most of the collections therein were donated to the\u00a0 Catania municipality and transferred to the civic museum of Castello Ursino.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;60px&#8221;][vc_gallery interval=&#8221;3&#8243;
